These were a series of floods that was thought to have been the gradual extinction of the dinosaurs. The Deccan Traps were thought to have lasted over 2 million years. Some evidence of this theory is that the possibility of simultaneous multiple impacts that caused the extinction. Yet another theory is multiple causes. Lastly, the most probable cause of the dinosaur extinction was an impact event. So this is what most scientists think happened. An asteroid hits earth, during the time of K-T boundary. How they know that it was most likely an asteroid is ecause inside of an asteroid is iridium. Guess what else contains iridium? The K-T boundary sedimentation line, thats what. So then a dust cloud from the asteroid impact blocks the sun for a year or less. This injects sulfuric acid aerosols into the atmosphere. The dust cloud then leads to 10-20% reduction of sunlight reaching the earths surface. In turn, this inhibits photosynthesis. It takes 10 years for aerosols to dissipate. The aerosols would account for the extinction of plants and phytoplankton. Then, it would produce high oxygen levels. This supports the intense combustion of he brush and tree. It makes widespread fires, and increases C02 content in the atmosphere. The wildfire leads to the greenhouse effect, and kills the most vulnerable organisms after impact. The greenhouse effect produces acid rain, which sounds dangerous, but if only a minor effect, and lasted for only 12 years. The acidity of the rain was actually neutralized by the environment. The animals vulnerable to acid rain effects actually survived, like frogs and such. Showing that the rain contributed to the effect very little. The hypothetical asteroid that would have caused ll this might be the Chicxulub crater in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. The size of this asteroid compared to their estimations of the hypothetical asteroid is very close. Leading to their conclusion that this MIGHT be the asteroid that causes the Cretaceous-Tertiary event. If you doubt that an asteroid could do all this damage listen to this. According to scientists calculations, a 10-25 km (6. 21-15. 53 miles) space rock hit the Yucatan Peninsula. The impact would have released the same energy as 100 trillion tons of TNT, or over a billion times the energy of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima. So, because this is all hypothetical, scientists searched for some real evidence of an unnatural extinction. And boy, did they find it. One of the Campanian Rocks The Campanian rock formations are an example of the evidence. They show a greater diversity of dinosaurs than any other. The Maastrichtian rocks contain the largest members of several clades. A clade is like a branch on the tree of life. Some of these members of the rock formation are Tyrannosaurus, and Triceratops. All of this suggests that food was plentiful prior to the mass extinction. Also, in addition to rich inosaur fossils, there are also many different species of plant fossils. There are many major extinctions that have happened throughout the history of our earth, but the K-T extinction event is the most well known. Extinctions are not an unusual event, and species regularly disappear through extinction. Nearly all animal and plant species that have lived on earth from the K-T extinction event are now extinct. The rate of extinction is fairly steady, sometimes it spikes in occasional mass extinction events. The animals that survived the K-T extinction event were omnivores, insectivores and carrion eaters. At the end of the Cretaceous Period, there were almost no herbivores or carnivores. Evidence suggests that the herbivores died out when the plants that the animals and food chain depended on died because of all of the fore mentioned events that occurred because of said impact event. After the herbivores died, the carnivores followed after, such as the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and its relatives, and enemies. The mammals and birds that survived fed on insects and such. Scientists think that these animals survived ecause they ate non-living organic material, and this contributed to their survival and adaptation. All of the animals that survived the impact, or started surviving went through natural selection. Natural selection is what causes evolution, and chooses who stays on earth, and who must go extinct. For example, the dinosaurs couldnt evolve fast enough to survive the catastrophe, and so natural selection got rid of them. The two main mechanisms that produce evolution are natural selection and genetic drift. Natural selection favors genes that aid survival and reproduction. Genetic drift is a random change in the frequency of alleles, cause by a random sampling of a generations genes during reproduction. The importance of natural selection and genetic drift vary depending on the strength of the selection and the effective population size. Effective population is the number of individuals in a species capable of breeding, and passing on their genes. Remember: natural selection dominates in large populations, and genetic drift dominates in small populations. All of this evidence proves that the extinction of the dinosaurs, in some way shape r form, led to humans evolving. If the impact event had not occurred, would there be some other dominant species? Of course. If nothing else, genetic drift and natural selection prove that life will always be striving for the top dog spot on the food chain. James Gordon Bennett, Legendary New York Herald Editor James Gordon Bennett was a Scottish immigrant who became the successful and controversial publisher of the New York Herald, a hugely popular newspaper of the 19th century. Bennettââ¬â¢s thoughts on how a newspaper should operate became highly influential, and some of his innovations became standard practices in American journalism. Fast Facts: James Gordon Bennett Born: September 1, 1795, in Scotland.Died: June 1, 1872, in New York City.Accomplishments: Founder and publisher of the New York Herald, often credited as being the inventor of the modern newspaper.Known for: An eccentric with obvious flaws whose devotion to putting out the best newspaper he could led to many innovations now common in journalism. A combative character, Bennett gleefullyà mocked rival publishers and editors includingà Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune and Henry J. Raymond of the New York Times.à Despite his many quirks, he was respected for the level of quality he brought to his journalistic endeavors. Before founding the New York Herald in 1835, Bennett spent years as an enterprising reporter, and he is credited as being the first Washington correspondent from a New York City newspaper. During his years operating the Herald he adapted to such innovations as the telegraph and high-speed printing presses. And he was constantly seeking better and faster ways to collect and distribute the news. Bennett became wealthy from publishing the Herald, but he possessed little interest in pursuing a social life. He lived quietly with his family, and was obsessed with his work. He could usually be found in the newsroom of the Herald, diligently working at a desk he had made with planks of wood placed atop two barrels. Early Life James Gordon Bennett was born September 1, 1795 in Scotland. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family in a predominantly Presbyterian society, which no doubt gave him a sense of being an outsider. Bennett received a classical education, and he studied at a Catholic seminary in Aberdeen, Scotland. Though he considered joining the priesthood, he chose to emigrate in 1817, at the age of 24. After landing in Nova Scotia, heà eventually made his way to Boston. Penniless, he found a job working as a clerk for a bookseller and printer. He was able to learn the fundamentals of the publishing business while also working as a proofreader. In the mid-1820s Bennett moved on to New York City, where he found work as a freelancer in the newspaper business. He then took a job in Charleston, South Carolina, where he absorbed important lessons about the newspapers from his employer, Aaron Smith Wellington of the Charleston Courier. Something of a perpetual outsider anyway, Bennettà definitely did not fit in with the social life of Charleston. And he returned to New York City after less than a year. Following a period of scrambling to survive, he found a job with the New York Enquirer in a pioneering role: he was sent to be the first Washington correspondent for a New York City newspaper. The idea of a newspaper having reporters stationed in distant places was innovative.à American newspapers up to that point generally just reprinted news from the papers published in other cities. Bennett recognized the value of reporters gathering facts and sending dispatches (at the time by handwritten letter) instead of relying on the work of people who were essentially competitors. Bennett Founded the New York Herald Following his foray into Washington reporting, Bennett returned to New York and tried twice, and failed twice, to launch his own newspaper. Finally, in 1835, Bennett raised about $500 and foundedà the New York Herald. In its earliest days, the Herald operated out of a dilapidated basement office and faced competition from about a dozen other news publications in New York. The chance of success was not great. Yet over the course of the next three decades Bennett turned the Herald into the newspaper with the largest circulation in America. What made the Herald different than all the other papers was its editors relentless drive for innovation. Many things we consider ordinary were first instituted by Bennett, such as the posting of the dayââ¬â¢s final stock prices on Wall Street. Bennett also invested in talent, hiring reporters and sending them out to gather news. He was also keenly interested in new technology, and when the telegraph came along in the 1840s he made sure the Herald was quickly receiving and printing news from other cities. Political Role of The Herald One of Bennettââ¬â¢s greatest innovations in journalism was to create a newspaper that was not attached to any political faction. That probably had to do with Bennettââ¬â¢s own streak of independence and his acceptance of being an outsider in American society. Bennett was known to write scathing editorials denouncing political figures, and at times he was attacked in the streets and even publicly beaten because of his strident opinions. He was never dissuaded from speaking out, and the public tended to regard him as an honest voice. Legacy of James Gordon Bennett Before Bennettââ¬â¢s publishing of the Herald, most newspapers consisted of political opinions and letters written by correspondents which often had obvious and pronounced partisan slant. Bennett, though often considered a sensationalist, actually instilled a sense of values in the news business which endured. The Herald was very profitable. And while Bennett became personally wealthy, he also put profits back into the newspaper, hiring reporters and investing in technological advances such as increasingly advanced printing presses. At the height of the Civil War, Bennett was employing more than 60 reporters. And he pushed his staff to make sure the Herald published dispatches from the battlefield before anyone else. He knew members of the public might purchase only one newspaper a day, and would naturally be drawn to the paperà that was the first with the news. And that desire to be the first to break news, of course, became the standard in journalism. After Bennettââ¬â¢s death, on June 1, 1872, in New York City, the Herald was operated by his son James Gordon Bennett, Jr. The newspaper continued to be very successful. Herald Square in New York City is named for the newspaper, which had been based there in the late 1800s. Controversy has followed Bennett many decades after his death. For many years the New York City Fire Department has awarded a medal for heroism named for James Gordon Bennett. The publisher, with his son, had set up a fund to award the medal to heroic firefighters in 1869. In 2017 one of the recipients of the medal issued a public call to rename the medal in light of the elder Bennetts history of racist comments.

The student will prepare a written report in the style of a scientific publication, including references (and will present their work to the staff and student cohort in the form of a PowerPoint presentation Teaching and Learning Strategy The Project Module provides an opportunity for the student to use the information-gathering, theoretical, practical and analytical skills that have been developing during the course. In addition, communication skills are developed during the preparation and presentation of the final project report in bo th a written form and as a PowerPoint presentation. Students will be encouraged to develop their own project ideas and liaise both with their clinical mentor and the project module tutor to ensure that these result in a sensible hypothesis and experimental design that may test the hypothesis. As such a wide variety of pieces of work may qualify for this module, including audits, questionnaire based studies, work with focus groups, reviews of scientific literature to gather data/information for analysis, analysis of any relevant databases or records of treatment histories. All projects will need to be approved in line with the Facultyââ¬â¢s policies on Health and Safety, ensuring Ethical Considerations and adherence with Peer Review of Scientific Proposals. Intern Experience Reflection Essay -- Reflection Paper, criminal justi
As I continue exploring the aspects of Family Inc., I find myself becoming more amazed at the tragedies that occur in the lives of juveniles. Society is always pointing the finger at the children, blaming them and punishing their negative actions. With a deeper look at the family system behind these children, I have found an empathy for the delinquent children. The organization is not only for delinquent children, but it is thought that children with incarcerated parents have a higher risk of going into the prison system. Especially since these children most likely get placed with grandparents, they could become more rebellious and hard to handle. Since learning the mentor database system, I have seen a bit more of the actual family aspect of the mentees. I have been updated and informed of children, the stories of their parents, and how they got where they are now. The circumstances that I have heard about are things that I could not even imagine going through myself. Growing up in Philadelphia and even having close friends with troubled homes has not prepared me for the issues I hear. It is no wonder these children lose their self-control. I guess this just shows the cycle of the criminal justice system. The streets create criminals, whether it be through poverty or simple environmental stressors. The criminals have children, like everyone else. Their children are subject to the living situations that come with losing a parent to the system, which in turn pushes them to the streets. They follow the same path their parents walked down. I see Family Inc. as an institution that creates a fork in the road, giving the child the options to go the right way and steer clear of crime. The mentor is a guide to show the light to the r... ...me to college. I finally get to see what I learned in the class come alive in the professional world. I now yearn to learn more about my career choice from the classroom, so I can continue to make use of it in the real world. I have even decided that I might change around a couple of my classes to figure out what juvenile classes are offer the coming semester. Overall, I am enjoying the experience. I am taking each day as it comes, learning as I go. I think that working with Family, Inc. is a good interning experience. I find it to be a good mix of my life goals and personal interest. I am currently a mentor, orientation leader, and university ambassador at school and I have always been one to be there to help new people adapt. I guess this has always been in my mind because, now that I think of it, even in my lower level jobs, I trained new employees.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Essay
Senator Sam Foley dies and the governor of a western state Huburt ââ¬Å"Happyâ⬠Hopper has to pick a replacement for deceased Senator. Jim Taylor Happyââ¬â¢s political boss tries to pressure him into to selecting one of his corrupt personnel. The popular committee wanted a reformer Henry Hill but the corrupt Jim Taylor was not going to allow that to happen. In the meantime Happy Hopper is struggling on who to select as Senator. While the governor is at dinner with his family his children start heckling him about who to pick as senator the children want him to choose Jefferson Smith the head of the Boy Rangers. Happy is unable to make a decision between Jim Taylorââ¬â¢s corrupt guy and Henry Hill so he decides to flip a coin. When the coin lands on the side next to the newspaper and the front of the newspaper has Jefferson Smith on the front page. So Happy decides to make Jefferson Smith when Jim Taylor hears the news on who Happy Hopper is making senator he is livid but Happy reassures Mr. Taylor that Smith will be very easy to manipulate and at the same time make the people happy. This is when Senator Joseph Payne steps in and also reassures Taylor that the corrupt bill that they are trying to pass while not be notice by Mr. Smith. Senator Payne then takes Jefferson Smith under his advisory and tries to make sure Mr. Smith will stay out of the way. When they arrive to the train station in Washington Mr. Smith meets Senator Payneââ¬â¢s daughter and is immediately attracted to her. When Mr. Smith finally makes it to his office the Washington press tricks him into saying things and quickly take advantage of him making him look like a fool on the front page. Senator Payne suggests that Mr. Smith makes a bill to keep him out of the way of catching on to the corrupt Dam Bill that they are trying to get through the house. Mr. Smith thinks itââ¬â¢s a great idea and wants to pass a bill for a boyââ¬â¢s camp so he gets with his secretary Clarissa Saunders who has been in Washington for a long time and is just waiting for a big bonus once the Dam Bill is passed. Mr. Smith creates a bill to get the government to buy land in his home state for a National Boyââ¬â¢s Camp that will be paid back by eachà young boy that attends the camp will have to pay a nickel. This is when Senator Payne and Jim Taylor realize that where Mr. Smith plans on putting the Boyââ¬â¢s Camp is on the same land that they plan on building the Dam. Clarissa Saunders has a change in heart because she know Mr. Smith is an honest man that wants to make a difference and tells him about Senator Payne and Jim Taylorââ¬â¢s plan about the Dam. Unwilling to corrupt Mr. Smith, Payne tells Jim Taylor he wants out but Taylor makes sure that Payne knows the only reason he is Senator is because of him. This is when Senator Payne brings forth to the house evidence that is not true that Mr. Smith owns the land he is trying to get the government to buy for the Boyââ¬â¢s Camp. This is when Clarissa Saunders decides to help Mr. Smith and tells him to do a filibuster to postpone the bill that Jim Taylor wants passed. They were going to vote him out but they were unable to with filibuster. It was Smiths last chance to prove his innocence he talks nonstop for about 24 hours trying to convince every one of the real motives of the Dam Bill. When Mr. Smith has no more hope and is about to give up he says a few thing to Senator Payne which makes him feel extremely guilty and leaves the Senate Chamber to try to commit suicide but isnââ¬â¢t successful and this is when he runs back into the Senate Chamber and confesses everything that hi m and Mr. Taylor were planning on doing Payne confirms Smithââ¬â¢s incorruptibility, and bellows that Smith was right about everything. Mr. Smith faced a lot of problems his short time as a Senator one of the problems that he faced was the Dam Bill and how Senator Payne and Mr. Taylor wanted him to just let it pass through congress even though he knew that it was corrupt. He wasnââ¬â¢t going to lower himself into being paid off or even a position as Senator for a very long to cloud his moral beliefs. He was an honest man and stood up for what he believed in even though it almost destroyed his name and kicked out of congress. A lot of members of congress should be more like Mr. Smith and not so easily persuaded. Member of congress face issues like this not to that extant but some of them are easily persuaded by other things like campaign money for someone in particular or even knowing that a certain person might help their bill getà passed faster. Another issue Mr. Smith faced was how the Washington press took everything he said and turned it around on him to make him look like a fool. Even though he was very naà ¯ve and didnââ¬â¢t know a lot about what he was doing as a senator. They were asking him question about what he wanted to do while he was Senator and then put it on the front page of the newspaper and made it look like he was something that he definitely wasnââ¬â¢t. People in congress have the same problem they have to be very careful about what they do and what they say because the press is always on them. One little mistake could get them in a lot of trouble. Just because they have good intention doesnââ¬â¢t mean thatââ¬â¢s what the press will let the public believe. In the publicââ¬â¢s eye it can look like you are doing everything wrong just because of one thing that is in the newspaper. Members of congress could avoid certain obstacles by making sure that when they are selected into congress they have a clear view of what and how they want to accomplish when they are there. They must know what they are willing to do to get things done correctly and by not being corrupt to get what they are trying to achieve. Morals and being honest would be the way I would good you must have good morals and honesty is everything. A man or womanââ¬â¢s word is one of the strongest and most influential things they can give to someone. In this paper I gave a brief summary on what the movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was about and the characters that were in it. The issues he had to face while being selected as Senator and what he was going to do about being corrupt or being an honest man that stood up for what he believed in. He had a lot of obstacles he had to face to clear his name and almost gave up but when it got tough the truth came out and he his name was cleared. I also talked about what issues the members of congress face in todayââ¬â¢s world and compared and contrast it with what Mr. Smith had to deal with in the movie and what ways we could fix the obstacles that they face. In this paper I gave a clear summary of the plot of the movie and why it is not easy to be a Senator and how to be more than just a someone who sits in the Senate Chamber.
